How Much is Product Photography Costing your Business?

$
0
0
Let's face it, product photography is not a fun task however it is critical to any business who wishes to communicate physical products online. Not only is product photography tedious, it demands countless man hours - typically from a higly - wage employee who has enough knowledge of photography and the important variables required to obtain a professional quality result. In this article, I will discuss the standard internal photography workflow of the small business, the time and cost businesses dedicate to product photography and the benefits Photosimile will provide any business whether large or small.
The standard product photography set-up usually consists of some sort of lighting environment, a white backdrop and a digital camera. These set-up’s can range in price from as low as $250 to tens of thousands of dollars for more complex set-ups that include the highest quality equipment. Regardless of how elaborate the equipment and no matter what the initial investment, an employee knowledgeable in product photography and lighting will be required to operate the system. This employee resource cost will always trump the initial investment so it is very important to consider operating expense in addition to equipment cost. Let’s discuss the standard workflow as broken down into three parts:
Image Capture:
Image capture will consist of product placement, adjusting lights, optimizing camera settings, snapping the product shot and reviewing the photo for quality. Typically this takes one or two test shots before a workable image has been captured. As mentioned before, the image capture portion of product photography gets quite tedious for any business that has numerous SKU’s. In addition, it is no longer enough to shoot just one single view of a product. Multiple angles and additional reference points are required when communicating products online, which significantly adds to the cost of product photography.
Image Upload and Sorting:
After image capture, the images need to be uploaded to the computer for final review. This is another labor intensive activity. Since the look and feel of the web site is very important to the buying process, someone will need to view each image and make selections based on picture quality and consistency. Inevitably there will be some pictures that looked great on the 2 x 2” viewfinder, but didn’t quite turnout as one would have hoped. For those product shots, it will be back to square one; picking the product out of inventory and re-shooting. If one took a safer approach and shot 2 – 4 images at each angle to ensure one will work, the workflow is no better. Not only has more time been taken to capture the images, but it also takes more time to select the best shot. For example, for 50 products that each requires 3 different angles – that’s a total of:
50 products x 3 different angles = 150 images x 3 (“safety shots”) = 450 individual images to upload, compare and evaluate for consistency. This will take hours. It’s important to get the right shot the first time.
Image Processing:
After selecting the master images, it is now time for processing. Image processing will include renaming each file, resizing, cropping and for some businesses masking (isolating the product from its background and changing background color to pure white). Image processing will be the most demanding step in the product photography workflow as it will require multiple steps for every single image.
Till Next Time…
Now that image processing is complete, the images can linked and published on the Web. All done right? No! Going forward there will be more products to shoot and the whole cycle will repeat. Any changes that can be made to make this process more efficient will have a huge impact on profitability.
There has to be a BETTER WAY
Reviewing the workflow outlined above, we can see how demanding product photography can be on business resources. Product photography is not going away; in fact it’s becoming more important to online success. For some businesses, outsourcing is an option. It removes the burden from the employees but can be expensive and introduce scheduling and ‘loss of control’ issues to the process. Finding a way to keep product photography in-house, but with a better solution, seems to fit most businesses the best. One available option is Photosimile, a computer-controlled photography system. Let us look at how the use of a Photosimile studio has allowed businesses to save tens of thousands of dollars each year through workflow optimization and by simplifying product photography.
What is a Photosimile Product Photography Studio?
By seamlessly integrating several existing technologies into one computer-controlled system, Photosimilesimplifies and automates product photography capture, sorting and processing to create an optimized workflow for business photography. Photosimile studios come in several sizes for shooting jewelry to live human models. Each system features the same basic components:
• A self-contained, uniform lighting environment
• A compatible digital camera (sold separately)
• System control software (Remote Capture/Image Processing)
• The ability to upgrade the studio to create 360-degree product animations
DSLR Remote Capture Software Included
The Photosimile system control software is the heart of the system. It controls the lighting environment, picture taking, image editing, processing and every aspect of a compatible Canon or Nikon camera.
Photosimile Product Photography Workflow Optimization – Image Capture/Image Uploading and Sorting are Combined:
Photosimile standardizes photography and controls many of the variables that make product photography difficult and inconsistent. By controlling the camera through a computer, image capture, upload and sorting can be combined. Several workflow benefits can be gained from this.
The Right Light
To compose and capture a product shot with the
Photosimile system, the user will simply place an object inside the Photosimile studio – this will provide perfectly-balanced, daylight lighting that will ensure a professional result every time. The symmetrical design and uniform lighting inside the studio also makes is possible to take shadow-free pictures.
Real Time Preview – Know the results before taking the picture!
Next, the user will select “Preview” inside the software – this provides a real time view of what the camera sees on the monitor screen – that is, users see how the picture will look before it is even snapped. This helps ensure consistent composition and product positioning, as the preview can be easily compared to previously captured pictures.
Full Camera Control via Software
Changes to camera settings (aperture, shutter speed, exposure, ISO, white balance and more) also appear onscreen in real time. For example if the preview appears too dark, changing the camera’s shutter speed (one simple mouse click) in the software to let more light into the sensor makes the onscreen preview lighter. Simply from here users will manually Zoom In/Out camera (if required), then using the “Crop” feature pre-crop around the object (no longer a need for cropping in post production software) and then hit Snap.
Immediate Results – Automatic Image Download
The product shot is instantly cropped, captured and uploaded to the Photosimile viewer in a couple seconds for high resolution viewing, editing and saving. Users can instantly proof images to ensure for quality. With Photosimile, when the product is removed from the lighting environment, users already know they have the angles and quality needed. There is never a need to re-pick a product from inventory for re-shooting.
Operation Costs
The time dedicated to Image Capture and Upload/Sorting has been dramatically decreased by ~80 – 90%. Even better, most low wage employees with 30 minutes of training can use Photosimile to efficiently capture great product photographs.
The Image Capture workflow is now streamlined and combined with Image Uploading and Sorting.
Image Processing:
Resolution adjustments, image resizing and renaming can be done in a batch process with just a couple simple clicks of the mouse. There is also an editing tool that will give users the ability to make color adjustments in a batch process in seconds and a “Program Link” button that will allow images to be instantly transferred into any third party editing software. Cropping is no longer necessary, as it was done before the picture was taken.
Because the images were taken inside a daylight balanced, controlled environment and are shadow-free, the amount of editing required for color accuracy and background removal are significantly decreased.
Overall, between processing and editing, Photosimile customers can expect to decrease the time dedicated to getting a good image by approximately 60%.
The Bottom Line
Save your business money! In-house product photography solutions with proven track records of reducing the time and effort spent to take professional pictures are available. It is no longer a requirement to have highly skilled, high wage employee(s) handling in-house product photography. Photosimile is an investment in a smarter photography workflow that will provide recurring ROI with every picture taken over the lifetime of your business. Ortery offers a new Magnification tool. When viewing 360 product views, users can now magnify any portion of a product at any angle.
“It’s a huge benefit for our customers” said Sam Shearer, Managing Director, Ortery Technologies, Inc. “For eCommerce or business communication, magnification allows people to get up close and see all the details.”

The new magnification feature works in both Flash and HTML5 (mobile optimized) formats and comes standard in all PhotoCapture 360 and Photosimile 5000 software. While most magnifier tools force the user to see details in a small “fixed” circle or square, Ortery’s 360 product view magnifier tool gives the user control over the size of the magnified area on the fly offering a more comfortable and interactive experience.

360 product views with magnification capabilities in HTML5 and Flash are perfect for eCommerce, mCommerce, websites, product development, quality control, and daily business communication. Watch the video below to see the 360 product view magnification tool in action. Additional information can be found on www.Ortery.com or contact an Ortery team member at +1 (949) 859-5580 or at Contact@Ortery.com.

Are you listing items on Amazon, Etsy, Ebay, Bonanza or your own web site?
Are you still going through the painstaking process of adjusting lighting for each photo, shooting with your digital camera, connecting it to your computer to download, and then spending hours matching up photos with products, renaming files, cropping and editing?

If you’re an online seller like us, you need to try Ortery’s Photosimile studio and remote capture software solutions.
We operate the internet’s largest vintage clothing store (RustyZipper.com), with over 30,000 unique items on our site at any given point in time. We take photos of over 2,000 items per month.
We have been using Ortery’s Photosimile 50 for the past 4 years and have taken over 100,000 product photos with this application. We have the ability to shoot all smaller items (under 20 x 20 x 20”) inside the Photosimile 50 studio which provides perfectly balanced lighting that ensures consistent, professional grade results every time. For the larger items we shoot external to the studio, we still take advantage of the Photosimile DSLR remote capture software to control the entire image capture/processing workflow. All camera setting adjustments can be done quickly from within the software without having to touch the camera.

No more adjusting lighting for each item — with a click of the mouse, the Photosimile DSLR remote capture software allows you to adjust all camera settings (aperture, shutter speed, white balance, sensitization, exposure & flash) making lighting adjustments unnecessary. Even better, these changes are reflected in real-time so we know how the end result will look before we even capture the image!
The ability to quickly crop the image while in “live view” before taking the photo is an imperative feature that saves our business countless man hours in post production.
Additionally, the image processing tools allow us to assign a filename (in our case to match our part numbers), resize and watermark (batch processing options available) in just seconds.

We use our Canon DSLR with excellent results.
We’ve tried several other remote capture applications however none had the workflow necessary for high volume photography that we found in Ortery’s Photosimile software. With their tools, we were able to cut our already fast setup and photo process time in half. For us, this adds up to a savings of over 120 hours per month in increased productivity and reduced labor costs. Ortery’s software has increased our production photography speed and accuracy and has saved us over $15,000 each year.

We would strongly recommend Ortery’s Photosimile studios and remote capture software to any business who has high volume photography requirements for selling online. It is the truly the ultimate tethered shooting tool.
Keep up the great work Ortery!

Ortery Success Story: Lotus Jewelry Studio

Every so often Ortery receives an inspiring email from a customer who’s used our product photography solutions to grow their small business. We are honored to be a part of so many success stories and are reminded of our mission to provide efficient and cost effective solutions for producing professional quality images. The following interview highlights Ortery 3D PhotoBench 60 customer Lotus Jewelry, one such company.

In 2007, Courtney and Erik Legenhausen founded Lotus Jewelry Studio. The Baltimore based husband and wife started the business with the mission of producing beautifully handcrafted pieces for the everyday woman. From humble beginnings of working out of their home basement as newlyweds, the Legensausen’s have gone on to expand Lotus Jewelry Studios to a 2,000.00 foot facility with a handful of employees and distribution to hundreds of retailers internationally. Ortery Technologies recently sat down with co-founder Erik Legenhausen to find out more about the important role product photography has played in their expansion.

Ortery: Describe your workflow before using Ortery product photography Equipment:
Erik: We struggled with photos.  We would either hire a pro or try to set up an outside photo tent but never had the results we were looking for.  As the industry changes all our competitors are beginning to use floating images (pure white background). With all our images in compositional formats (with varied backgrounds and props) we were looking dated.

What was the average time spent on product photography before using the 3D PhotoBench 60?
FOREVER!  Just to get an average shot!

What did you want to accomplish?
We were reshooting our entire 1400 piece product line for a brand new website launch.  We needed pure white background images that increase online sales and accurately display our jewelry.

Roughly how many products have you shot with the 3D PhotoBench 60?

We’ve taken about 1400 so far in just about a week or two. We found it much easier to make it a two person job. One person operating the computer and camera while the other preps the next product. When we started to really get comfortable each piece could take as little time as 30 seconds including editing.  Sometimes for certain items, a few minutes of setup’s required but the photography and editing using the PhotoBench software is a breeze.

How many images do you shoot of each product? One single product view online or multiple?
For now one shot of each product just to get the site up and running.  Unless we needed a top shot and a front shot... then two.  We also took a shot of each color option etc.  In the future we will add additional pictures.

Did the 3D PhotoBench 60 product photography studio reduce or eliminate the time needed to edit the images?
We used to import pictures into Photoshop and pay our designer to edit.  It has eliminated this and allowed her to focus on real graphic design.

Were you able to create professional pictures with the system?
YES! Amazing.  We feel like our website and pictures are right up there with the big online retailers...ie: Amazon, Zappos, Endless Etc. After a slight learning curve it is soooooo easy.  I have zero experience with photography and was able to take all the pics.  I used a low wage employee to help me set up each shot but I took all the images.

Have you ever required tech support from Ortery? If so, what was your experience?
Quick and helpful.  One hour of free training came with the system, however the majority of the learning came from daily use and trial and error.

How does the workflow of the Photobench 60 product photography studio compare to your previous setup?
NO COMPARISON.  Ortery rocks!!!! The system has already paid for itself in time savings and the professional online presence it gives us.  We hope that with the increased online sales the system will actually generate revenue not just pay for itself!

Would you recommend this equipment to others?
Already have :)

Why Flat Fashion Photography is Quickly Becoming the Internet Standard

$
0
0

If you’re in fashion photography, then you’ve stylized a mannequin before… put a pin here, fold the fabric there. It requires at least two people, time and an eye for every detail.  However, in the fast paced world of ecommerce, the mannequin’s days may be numbered.

In an effort to ‘clean up’ their site and make the shopping experience more ‘consistent’, Amazon’s Clothing Style Guide, the guide that lists the rules regarding product photography on Amazon.com, clearly states that “Product images photographed on a mannequin” are prohibited. Furthermore, images must have a pure white background (hex color code #ffffff).

For multichannel merchants planning their photography strategy, knowing these rules from the beginning is important, because re-shooting is never a good option.  For these reasons and more, companies have been adopting flat fashion photography solutions from Ortery Technologies. Shooting items on a flat surface with a ClothingPad or ClothingPad Mini offers the following benefits:

  • Simple to Use
  • High Speed Production Photography Solution
  • Shoot Products on Pure White Backgrounds
  • Automatic Transparent Backgrounds - AutoPNG
  • Real-Time Preview
  • High Consistency Between Shots and Over Time
  • Computer Controlled Photography – Software Controls the Complete Workflow from Image Capture to Batch Saving
  • Adjustable Camera Zoom, Distance and Location
  • High Color Accuracy
  • Reduces or Eliminates Extensive Editing in Photoshop·

How Depth of Field Applies to Product Photography

$

0

Have you ever taken a picture of an object that is clear in the front then gets blurry toward the back? Why does that happen? Understanding what depth of field is and how to control it will allow you to create better photographs that highlight exactly what you want the viewer to see.

CameraIn_Focus_Ruler

Blurry                        In Focus                        Blurry

What is Depth of Field?

Depth of Field is the distance between the nearest and farthest points in a scene that appear acceptably sharp and in focus. A camera will focus on a certain point. The further away from that point, in either direction, the blurrier the image becomes.

How To Control Depth of Field?

Depth of Field is primarily controlled by camera aperture or f-stop with the depth of field being inversely related to aperture size.

  • A wider aperture which corresponds to a smaller f-stop number (f-2.8 – 5.6) yields a shallow depth of field. In other words, a selective focus point with more of the photo being out of focus.
  • A smaller aperture which corresponds to a larger f-stop number (f-13–22) yields a greater or longer depth of field. In this case, most of the photo will be in focus.

How to Put Depth of Field to Work?

Depth of field can be used to create interesting effects. You may have different reasons for choosing a certain depth of field, including artistic effect, highlighting a specific area or to achieve a crisp clear focus throughout.

In order to create a photograph with a visible depth of field you will need to consider the following factors:

  1. Object Length / Depth: The thicker or longer the object, the more you will need to manage depth of field.
  2. Available Light: The more light available, the higher the f-stop that can be used to increase depth of field
  3. Shooting Distance: With the same aperture, a deeper depth of field can be obtained by increasing the distance between the camera and object being photographed
  4. Lens Type: Different lenses have different depth of field capabilities. Macro lenses have shorter depth of field. A 100mm macro with have a shorter depth of field than a 50mm macro.
  5. Use a Tripod: As aperture is increased for a greater depth of field, less light enters the camera. To compensate for this and maintain correct exposure, a slower shutter speed or higher ISO is required. Note that using a higher ISO will result in increased image noise, so it is recommended to use a slower shutter speed and a stable tripod.

It is never recommended to push a lens to the limit in order to get maximum depth of field. For example, if f-32 is the smallest aperture possible, shooting at f-32 will yield below average results. Regarding image quality, each lens has an optimal aperture or f-stop number determined by the manufacturer. It’s typically between f-8 – f-11. Learn more about aperture, light diffusion and image clarity. Sometimes for best results, a different lens or different shooting method may be necessary.

Focus Stacking

Focus stacking is an alternative shooting method in which multiple pictures are taken over a range of focus points then re-combined to create one picture that has no depth of field limitations. Jewelry and macro photographers commonly use focus stacking to obtain the sharp results they desire.

There is no ‘correct’ depth of field, there is only mastering depth of field and using it to create desired effects.

Image Clarity, Aperture, and Diffraction

At Ortery Technologies we are always looking to expand our photography knowledge and solve problems for our customers. This week we came across an excellent video by Alex Koloskov, that explains diffraction and how it plays a part in macro photography. Here is how we would explain image clarity, aperture, and diffraction.

Light travels in waves and your camera lens acts as a barrier between light and the camera sensor. When shooting at a small aperture such as f22 your lens is only allowing a small amount of light through. While this increases your overall depth of field it causes the light to travel through in more of a cone shape. As the light passes through the opening, it quickly spreads and bounces off the walls of the chamber. This causes diffraction and degrades the overall image quality. When you shoot at a large aperture like f8 there is a large opening which allows the light to easily pass through the camera lens to the camera sensor. This minimizes bouncing of the light, which leads to sharper images. Although you experience a lower depth of field, your image has a higher clarity on the areas that are in focus. This concept is illustrated in the diagram below.

aperture

Here are two sample shots that show the effects of diffraction. The first image is shot with an aperture of f8. The second image is shot with an aperture of f32.

Lower Depth of Field – f8

Higher Depth of Field – f32

While the first image has a lower depth of field, the area that is in focus is extremely clear. The second image shot at f32 has a greater depth of field, but lacks the clarity that can be seen in the first image.

At this point you might be asking yourself “how can I achieve both a high level of clarity and a large depth of field?” Ortery Technologies software has a feature called focus stacking which allows you to take multiple images and compress them into one image that is in focus from front to back. This allows you to shoot at an aperture like f8 where you will receive a low depth of field and high level of clarity. Here is an example where we shot the same amethyst with an aperture of f8, but using focus stacking. A total of 13 images were captured and processed into this final image.

Understanding diffraction helps explain why using a higher f-stop value to achieve a greater depth of field is not always the best approach. We now know by doing so we are losing overall clarity from our image. The invention of focus stacking has given us the ability to use a low F-stop value to achieve a higher level of clarity and depth of field.

At Ortery Technologies, We help companies take better pictures and communicate more effectively with images. Whether it’s for eCommerce, product development, quality control or daily business communication, many of our computer-controlled photography studios can take pictures on pure white making still, 360 and 3D photography simple and fast.

Do You Have What It Takes For Product Photography

Producing high-quality images for your business requires a lot of work and skill. There are obvious variables such as the type of tools you use or the amount of talent or knowledge that you have. Let’s review them to see what you are in for.

The Right Tools

First off you need the right tools. We have mentioned in several of our previous blog post that this is the key to it all. Having the right equipment matters when it comes to getting the best shot – easily. This goes for amateur and professionals. Having the right lens, light sources, reflectors, turntable and a clutter free background can help you achieve a good shot. Remember the camera cannot do magic on its own. It is simply a tool in the mix of all that you need.

Editing Software

Having the right equipment can certainly reduce or even eliminate editing, however editing can always be used to add ‘feel’ to a picture and make it ‘pop’. Ideally, your editing software is part of the photography process and not a stand-alone application. While Photoshop can do incredible things, in the day to day grind of eCommerce photography speed and the ability to re-use editing presets are also extremely valuable.

Knowledge

Knowledge about photography is never-ending. When it comes to photography, anyone interested should take the time to learn the basics of their light and camera. There are several resources you can turn to on the Web such as blog articles, YouTube videos and online classes. Learn aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focal length, sensor size and all of their side effects. It will help you to know what to do in any given situation to achieve a worthy photograph.

I am sure this sounds complicated. Which it is! Repeatedly taking excellent product shot is not only talent but a true science. Yet, if there were a way to make it easier and faster would you think it was worth it? Ortery Technologies has taken the guessing game out of it. No need to build a science experiment out of it. Our solutions eliminate the variables and provide a streamlined workflow with three easy steps:

  1. Set
